How to pick the right gift for anyone

Choosing the right gift for anyone can be a daunting task, especially if it’s for someone you don’t know very well. You want to make sure they’re going to like it, and that it is not going sit around collecting dust, never to see the light of day; or worse, send the wrong message and possibly end that friendship. Below are some tips that I personally use as a guideline when selecting gifts for loved ones and business associates. I have followed these and have always had great success. However, this is not an exhaustive list, and you may know some others.

1-Choose the right gift for the occasion:

You should consider a gift of lasting quality, beauty and perceived value. This gift should be memorable and useful. When selecting a gift for a graduation, a nice sports watch is ideal; jewelry for an anniversary, a radio-controlled clock that sets itself for a wedding gift. It will be useful to that new couple.

2-Choose a gift that suits the recipient:

This is where many people fail when selecting a gift for someone. You have to absolutely consider the recipients lifestyle and taste. If it’s a person you don’t know very well, find out what their hobbies and interests are; the different things they like to do in their spare time—watch and listen for clues when they talk. If for instance they are nature lovers, sports fans, or like to see things in great detail, consider optical instruments such as a historic naval spy glass; binoculars, or a universal optical instrument.

3-Avoid making inappropriate gifts:

For instance, let’s say you’re in the very early stages of a relationship—one without any romantic intimacy at this point—with someone whom you wish to eventually have an intimate romantic relationship, “DO NOT” even consider offering them undergarments as a gift.  That can send the wrong message and end it all for good.

Avoid buying artwork, articles of clothing; or anything that is subject to personal taste—unless they have chosen or requested them specifically. This includes certain types of books, music, religious items, and things with a political or sexual nature.

4-Put some effort into it:

Gift cards have become so popular because it takes the real effort out of picking a gift. But when choosing a gift for your significant other, you don’t want to appear as if you don’t really care. Since you know them intimately, picking the right gift should be much easier. Many couples simply ask what the other wants. However, this gets old. Once in a while, you have to surprise them with something totally unexpected.

Now it’s time to put your new skills to work. Please send your comments.
